“Until the Lord has given your brethren rest, as He has given you, and they also have possessed the land which the Lord your God gives them, then you shall return to the land of your possession and enjoy it, which Moses the Lord’s servant gave you on this side of the Jordan toward the east.” - Joshua 1:15
Rest is a valuable part of life because it allows us to relax, recharge, and refresh. As a result, we gain new energy and confidence for the tasks ahead. This is simply the rest that ends when we need to engage in other things. Several biblical passages called the Israelites to enter or embrace rest. They were called to observe the Sabbath day of rest, mirroring God’s rest.
However, despite these calls to rest, the Israelites have never truly experienced rest because of the challenges they faced and their disobedience. This brings us to an important realisation that true rest awaits after struggles and hardships with obedience.
It is not the kind of rest Joshua and Moses promised. It is the rest beyond the river. This is the kind of rest that is unlimited, with enjoyment and possessions of life. It is beyond our sight. Until we cross the river of struggles, which flows with hunger, illness, persecution, and temptations, we will not find rest.
To find the rest beyond the river, we need love, faith, and hope through Jesus Christ. We need a committed life and to be obedient to God by following His instructions carefully. The Israelites were instructed while crossing the Red Sea and the Jordan River; those who obeyed managed to reach the Promised Land. (1:18). We need each other to push across the river, as Joshua said, “Until the Lord has given your brethren rest as He has given you.”
Dear brothers and sisters, in this world, we do not have and will never have true rest. Our true rest is beyond the river, hidden from our sight. It is only through Jesus Christ alone that we can reach it. For He said, “Come to me, and I will give you rest.” Matt 11:28. Challenges might deter you, but have faith and hope, and commit to God’s statutes and oracles. Obey Him in all things, and He will guide your ways.
Reflection Questions
1. What struggles are you facing in your life, and how
can you trust God’s guidance?
2. How can you prioritise obedience to God’s statutes
and oracles and find rest in His presence?
3. What role can your church and support play in your life as you navigate the road to the rest beyond the riverlands?
Let us pray.
Dear God, as we journey towards the rest beyond the
river, amidst struggles and uncertainties, strengthen our faith and trust in
Your sovereignty. Like the Israelites, we struggle to trust in the promise of
rest, but thank You for reminding us to hold onto faith, hope, and Your Word.
Guide us, Lord, as we navigate life's challenges, and grant us peace that
surpasses understanding through Jesus Christ. Amen.
