FILE A CASE AGAINST ALINUR MOHAMED
By Ayella John Bosco, 15th May 2025
On 14th May 2025, South Sudanese and the world caught fire on the internet about the alleged death of President Kirr. A renowned political Kenyan journalist named Alinur Mohammed posted on his Facebook page, “I hear President Salva Kiir of South Sudan has kicked the bucket. Let's wait for official communication.” This message divided the country into two sects: those tired of President Kiir’s rule were hopeful, while the others condemned the propaganda in the strongest terms.
Worst of all, it made
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and other government
authorities sleepless, because they had to release a press statement to refute
the allegation shared throughout the night with the citizens. Nevertheless, why
would someone wish another person to die if nothing happens, especially wish for
a leader who does not have direct influence over you?
In 2018, the same
scenario happened; the country went mute and confused until the President had
to come out to prove the news in circulation wrong. The government treated that
propaganda with contempt and arrested many citizens. Now, the current announcement
of the alleged death of the President comes from miles away. What is next?
In South Sudan, not every
propaganda is propaganda, especially if its origin comes from trusted persons. Many
rumours turned out to be true since the outbreak of war in the country in 2013. With that
in mind, the citizen should not accept any rumours coming from the next door
just to confuse the nation.
Wishing President
Kiir dead is not only a propaganda crime but also an attempt to assassinate him,
which is a violation of his right to life and, hence, a capital offence against a state
leader. Including Alinur Mohamed, citizens should know that life belongs to God
and everyone has the right to live. While we, the citizens of South Sudan, are
tired of President Kiir’s rule, we do not wish him dead but encourage him to
leave a legacy of peace, security, unity and development if he wants to leave.
I therefore encourage
the citizen to be vigilant in protecting President Kiir from unwanted assassination
that some members of East Africa, like Alinur Mohamed, wished. If for anything,
we want President Kiir to live to see the next youthful leadership of the country
in isolation.
To curtail any further
misinformation about the leaders' lives, the cybercrime prevention unit of the
government, with the necessary body, should file a case against Mr. Alinur
Mohamed for an assassination attempt, defaming the nation and causing storms of
pain to the country. We should not accept some rumours, especially when they come
from outside the country. Alinur is not far; he needs to defend his wish before
the law.
