The Killing of Rev. Maring and Eng. Conty: A Dark State Under Rule
Torit, 19-1-2026
On 16 January, Juba witnessed the killing of an Africa Inland Church clergy, Reverend Maring. Today, 19 January, Juba again has witnessed the killing of Eng. Conty. These two citizens were killed just three days apart. Both fatalities occurred in broad daylight. Apart from these two recent incidents, hundreds are dying without public notice. All this is happening in a country that everyone expected to be free for all.
Whatever the investigations may conclude
regarding these two incidents, there are no political motivations behind either
of them. What we must understand is the reality of a failed system, one that
cannot offer protection to its citizens. Instead, it is a system that
continuously and seemingly innocently turns the barrels of guns against the
very people it is meant to protect.
Several examples show that the government in
question is too adamant to provide basic services. The security of every
citizen is a fundamental right. If a government turns its guns against its own
citizens, it deserves resistance by all means.
Let us reflect on the killing of Eng. Conty.
This young man was a government official who should have faced no questions
during a security check. His vehicle identification was clear, and he deserved
respect from everyone. His only fault would be disobeying traffic laws. As for
the killing of Rev. Maring, he was an innocent shepherd who served everyone
equally, with no political affiliation, no tribal affiliation, nothing, but he
was murdered in cold blood.
It is clear that when the wicked rule, the
people groan, and when the righteous reign, the people rejoice. These two
incidents vividly portray the evil that has captured the nation and has become
extremely difficult to uproot. The only way forward is for citizens to apply
pressure until the government is brought to its knees.
Otherwise, the security of the nation has been
sold out. It is only a matter of who will be next. The list is long. We must
become our own security and find our own ways to stay safe before it is too
late to regret. When killings become everyday news, fear becomes the ultimate
price of life. We must resist it.
