Devotion 7/8
Hebrews 2:1-4
Do you believe that salvation cannot be lost? But
do you know that while saved, you will face God's righteous judgement? And do
you understand that God does not rejoice in sin, even though He saves you? Are
you aware that you have the responsibility to uphold your salvation with
integrity and honesty? To answer these questions correctly, let us turn to the
Bible to see what it has to say.
Those who believe in the Name of the Lord Jesus
are indeed saved, as the Bible states. However, we must work diligently to
maintain this salvation. Many believe that salvation cannot be lost, but must
we neglect it? Certainly not! God's Word warns us against neglecting it or
drifting away. Hebrews 2:2 says, “... and every transgression and disobedience
receives a just reward.” In addition,
God’s Word continues saying, “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a
salvation...” Vs3.
Believers should recognise the power and
authority of salvation and obey its commands. Hebrews 2:1 says, “Therefore, we
must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift
away.” There is no reason to indulge in sin simply because we feel secure in
our salvation. When believers drift away while saved, there are consequences.
Being saved does not grant immunity from God's judgement.
While it is true that believers do not lose their
salvation, God calls us to heed earnestly and adhere to our salvation. If we
return to sin, the Bible says, there is no more salvation for the second time
because Christ has accomplished the work of saving for the last time (Hebrews 10:26).
Before we conclude, challenge yourselves with
these questions: How do you balance the assurance of salvation with the call to
live responsibly before God? What does it mean for you to give the more earnest
heed to the things you have heard about salvation in your daily life? If you have struggled to balance the assurance of your salvation with living responsibly, what new actions will you take in your daily life?
Dear
brothers and sisters, this passage is a warning to those who drift away from
salvation. You will not escape the righteous judgement of God for neglecting
your salvation. There is a consequence for disobedience. You should earnestly heed God, live a responsible life, and avoid drifting away.
Prayer
Heavenly
Father, help us to never neglect the great salvation You have given us through
Your Son, Jesus Christ. Grant us the wisdom and strength to heed earnestly to
Your Word, to live responsibly before You, and to avoid drifting away from the
truths of salvation. May we honour You with our lives, walk in obedience to Your commands, and cling to the assurance of our salvation. In Jesus' name,
we pray. Amen.
