Scripture: Hebrews 1:10-14.
Days, weeks, or years keep passing; crops and vegetation change, and people grow and die. This reflects the essence of created beings and natures. It is no surprise to see a village transform into a city or a mountain feature become a plain. These changes are inevitable. Creations are destined to change over time and through geographical shifts.
However, this differs from the essence of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Let us turn to the Word of God to understand why. The writer of Hebrews states that Jesus laid the foundation of the earth in 1:10. This implies that Christ is the creator of all things, and, therefore, He shapes creation rather than creation shaping Him. All that He created will perish (verse 11); He can fold all of them like a cloak and change them, but He never changes (verse 12). He exists permanently because He is not created. The unchanging essence and nature of Christ emphasise His superiority.
It is sometimes saddening to see believers driven by the storm of unbelief because of the changes they experience. This is because many find themselves idolising created things, neglecting Christ's superiority – the Unchanging, Eternal Creator. As believers, we should root our faith in the unchanging, eternal creator who shapes life. When we trust Him as our superior and eternal creator, we shall inherit salvation and live eternally with Him. Verse 14. We should trust Him by giving our lives to His superiority and worship alone.
Dear brothers and sisters, which part of your life is challenged by the changing nature of creatures as you reflect on the eternal Creator? How do you demonstrate the superiority of Christ in your salvation? What are your thoughts on why things that were created generally change? What does the superiority of Christ teach you about God? As we meditate on this devotion, may we trust in the unchanging eternal Creator and make Him Lord of our lives. Let His superiority be a mark that transforms our understanding and faith. Additionally, let us not be consumed by the changing nature or claim of another creature to idolise.
Prayer
Dear God of heaven, our unchanging, eternal Creator, we thank you for reminding us to worship you alone. We thank you for creating and moulding us. May you guide us to trust and worship you alone and not to be driven by any claim that would take your place.
Amen.
