Devotion 5/8:

Hebrews 1:8. "But to the Son He says, 'Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of Your kingdom.'

To understand this text well, let us define the new term “sceptre”. What is a sceptre? A sceptre is a symbolic rod – a rod signifies guidance biblically. As we continue to explore Hebrews, we find Christ described as a sceptre of righteousness. Though symbolic, this concept carries deep meaning related to Christ's superiority.

Building on this, let us consider what it means when God describes His Son as "a sceptre of righteousness". Scripture states, "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of Your kingdom." This passage highlights Jesus' royal authority, emphasising that His throne is eternal.

It also exemplifies that Jesus stands above all else. Among God's creations, Jesus alone is given bona fide royal authority above all angels and all else (Heb. 1:6). As a sceptre of righteousness, He is divine authority by birth as the firstborn among all, guiding justice and morality. His rule is royal, divined, authentic, and legitimate.

However, recently, many distort and claim the royal authority of Christ. Many do not seek His guidance for true justice and morality, as they undermine His divinity. It is sinful and heretical. For Paul warned the Galatians, saying, “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed" (Galatians 1:8).

In light of this warning, let us seek God’s guidance. God calls us to acknowledge Christ's royal authority, divine guidance, and true justice, worshipping Him alone. Like the angels, let us seek His guidance for truth and justice through Him. We should worship Him alone and bow before His throne with humility and a confessed heart. This is because He alone is the Sceptre of Righteousness.

As we reflect on Christ's supremacy as a sceptre of righteousness, let us ask ourselves: How can we acknowledge Christ's royal authority in our lives? In what ways can we seek His guidance for truth and justice? How can we worship Him alone and bow before His throne with humility?

May we recognise Christ's supremacy and worship Him with reverence, acknowledging His divine guidance and true justice. May His royal authority shape our lives, and may we seek His guidance in all things.

Dear God, help us acknowledge your Son's supremacy as we seek guidance and true justice in our daily lives. May His royalty shape our lives as we worship and bow in humility before His everlasting throne.

Amen.
