Text: Hebrews 10:1-18
In many traditional societies, we encounter various types of sacrifices. I have seen many forms of rituals. Others offered chickens, goats, and sheep. This type of sacrifice is done whenever a bad event is about to happen or has already occurred. It is either to prevent an impending death or destruction or to purify people from death or diseases. However, these sacrifices never truly purified or prevented events, as they continued to recur.
The Israelites followed similar practices, offering burnt sacrifices, fellowship sacrifices, and sin or guilt sacrifices. The high priest did that on behalf of the people. Yet, it was a frequent practice that led to the killing of many animals. The Old Testament sacrificial system did not make perfect those who drew near (10:2). It did not take away sins. Instead, it reminded people of their sins annually because the blood of bulls and goats could not remove sins. 10:4-5
In contrast, Christ came and ended the OT system by offering His body as a sacrifice to sanctify for the last time (10:10, John 17:19). He offered his body to perfect all those who are being sanctified, unlike the yearly Old Testament sacrifices (10:14). His body offering also destroyed the works of the devil. He made the enemy a footstool (10:13). Christ’s sacrifice opened the opportunity for forgiveness through grace (10:18).
Reflection and Application
Recognise the inadequacy of human efforts to appease God. Marvel at the wonderful sacrifice of Christ, which perfects and sanctifies us. Live in the freedom and victory secured by Christ's sacrifice. Reflect on areas where you tried to earn God's blessing through human efforts in vain. How can you trust Christ as a better sacrifice to bless your life? Many people are still stuck in the system of sacrifice as a way to earn blessings or forgiveness. How would you mind introducing them to this new truth?
Conclusion
Christ's sacrifice is better and superior in the sense that it sanctifies all those who believe in His name, perfecting the imperfect and defeating the works of the devil. The killing of animals was not enough, but the body of Christ, offered as a sacrifice, has drawn humankind near to God, bridging the broken relationship. May this truth be a guide to your need for God’s blessing and cleansing instead of the mere animals’ blood. May the superior sacrifice of Christ bring you joy, peace and love in your relationship with God and one another.
Prayer
Father, we thank you for sending Jesus as the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you that His blood has cleansed us from sin. We pray that His victory over the devil provides us hope. God, help us to live in the light of this superior sacrifice in the name of your sacrificed Son, our Lord and Jesus, our Saviour.
Amen.
