"Blessed are the gentle, for they will inherit the earth." Matthew 5:5 NLT
Devotion. 27th June, 2025
Life's challenges can be overwhelming, making it difficult to remain gentle and composed. We all face situations that can make us defensive and tense. However, as believers, we hold a different standard. Jesus rebuked Peter for lashing out, telling him to calm down when he cut Malchus' ear, reminding him to face challenges with gentleness.
This kind of response is what God encourages us to have—gentle, calm, and compassionate, even when emotions are high. But is it possible? Matthew emphasises the importance of gentleness in his words, saying, ‘Blessed are the gentle, for they will inherit the earth' (5:5). This is encouraging, isn’t it? We strive for better things in life, and gentleness can be the key. Jesus exemplifies gentleness by saying, “Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart” (Matthew 11:29).
In our daily lives, we face various challenges, from personal struggles to relationships and even global conflicts. For instance, recently, Israel went to war with Iran due to perceived threats. Instead of approaching the situation with gentleness and mutual agreement, both countries suffered losses. This teaches us that gentleness and calmness are crucial in resolving crises, as a local saying goes, “Fire cannot quench fire.” You need water (gentleness) to put out the fire (the crisis).
Have you ever experienced a tough life issue being resolved without gentleness? How did it end? Reflecting on our experiences can help us understand the value of gentleness.
In light of these examples, it is essential to be gentle always when facing life crises. Unfortunately, gentleness is not possible without the Spirit of God, as gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit. If you feel you lack this quality, know that you may not have the Spirit of God, and those without the Spirit are destined for destruction. Think twice, be gentle, and you'll inherit the earth, as Jesus taught.
Now that you have learned the value of gentleness in crisis, how will you apply it? Is there a relationship you need to approach with gentleness? Will you forgive someone or seek forgiveness? Remember, gentleness is key: "Be gentle, and you will inherit the earth"—a promise from Jesus Christ.
Dear Heavenly Father,
I call upon your holy name to help me be gentle always. Let me experience the presence of the Holy Spirit to display its fruit fully in my life, not neglecting gentleness. Thank you, Lord.
Amen.
