FACE THE CRISES OF LIFE WITH PERSEVERANCE

"For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise." Hebrews 10:36.

One of our pastors, my mentor, who recently passed away, bravely battled pneumonic cancer for almost 15 years. I had the privilege to consult with him about life and spiritual growth during his lifetime.

In 2021, when his condition started to worsen, I felt discouraged and lost hope. However, he shared a powerful statement: "The devil is playing with my bones, but never will he touch my spirit life," referencing Ezekiel 37:11.

This moment made me realise the importance of persevering through life's crises, and I stopped worrying about his life. Many believers face life-threatening challenges that hinder their spiritual development and growth. Without perseverance, they might burn out.

Like the pastor, who maintained his faith despite adversity, the Apostle Paul encouraged the Corinthians to persevere like athletes striving for a crown (1 Corinthians 9:24-27). He urged them to "run in such a way that you may obtain it," emphasising the need to persevere through sufferings to attain the prize.

Although the pastor faced immense physical pain and medical challenges, he remained steadfast in his faith. Instead of being discouraged, he encouraged those who visited him. His story was celebrated within the church, inspiring many with his unwavering faith in the face of suffering.

A personal example that comes to mind is my child, who used to fear physical pain intensely. If hurt, he would cry all day, seeking protection. Thankfully, he has learned to endure pain over time.

Similarly, when facing crises, we often seek answers from various sources. To persevere means to navigate through the pain thoughtfully, finding ways to overcome it without losing faith. Just like athletes who push through hardships to win a crown, perseverance is essential to achieving the prize.

As we conclude our study of perseverance, consider: Are there any life challenges that hinder your spiritual growth and development? How do you usually manage them? In our previous devotion, we learned about different principles for facing crises in context. With these principles in mind, do you think you can better support someone who needs encouragement?

Take a moment to reflect on someone who is experiencing significant pain and is about to give up. Pray that they will understand that enduring like an athlete will lead to victory.

Paul reminded us that he had fought a good fight; we should also fight the same fight Paul fought to win the race through perseverance. 2 Timothy 4:7, so fight the fight! You will win

Dear God, many people are going through a lot of pain, and I am one of them. With your encouraging word today, I am glad to accept the challenge to endure it without wavering in my faith. Help me to stand through these trials until your glory comes.

Amen.
