BUT THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT IS SELF-CONTROL, Galatians 5:23.
In my early years, I struggled to control my
thoughts, and at one point, I considered drastic measures due to perceived favouritism.
Similarly, many people, particularly young adults, struggle to manage their
behaviours, words, and actions. These uncontrolled thoughts, behaviours, and
actions need attention, which Paul calls self-control in Galatians 5:23.
Self-control is a vital aspect of Christian
life; the Bible refers to it as the fruit of the Spirit. Self-control does not
make one perfect, but it involves denying oneself (Galatians 2:20), both the
inner and outer self, and completely surrendering to God’s Spirit to live a
life that honours God.
AS Believers, we should exercise self-control, apparently
in how we dress, both in public and during our leisure time; we should also
practice restraint in our words, choosing to use language that blesses others
while avoiding self-exaltation.
Today, God calls us to reflect on areas where we need
to improve, such as our thoughts, behaviours and actions, which are damaging to
the Holy Spirit’s Fruit. Without hiding behind a blank curtain of shame, identify
one area in your life that needs self-control, make a U-turn, and ask God to help
you to glorify Him rather than appease your thoughts, behaviour and actions.
Self-control is not about being perfect, but it is about
living your thoughts, words and actions to glorify God in your weaknesses, being
broken about the self that doesn’t honour Him.
Do your thoughts, Words and Actions honour and glorify God?
PRAY
Dear God,
Help me surrender myself to your Spirit and exercise self-control in my thoughts, words and behaviour for your Glory and Honour. Where I find it difficult, God, you are able through your Holy Spirit. Give the strength and wisdom to face and resist temptations gloriously. May I live to honour and glorify you through my thoughts, actions and Words.
Amen.
