South Sudan was established on the principle of unity in diversity. This unity remained strong until independence in 2011. However, the illusion of tribalism has obstructed this unity, causing the country to fall into a cycle of conflicts and setbacks. Tribal affiliations have been exploited for economic, political, and social advantage, creating divisions that weaken national cohesion.
Currently, despite the need to eliminate tribalism and return to the glory of the past, tribal groupings and favouritism are still practised openly. A recent example is the Coalition for South Sudan Opposition Movement (CSSOM), which included 16 Nuer commanders, and the awarding of scholarships to 30 Dinka students. This blatant tribal spirit is a curse to South Sudan's unity.

Nuer Commanders in the name of Unity |
One must ask, why should I unite with someone who does not value my contributions to the community, or why fight a battle in which I will be abandoned later? In Psalm 133, David said, "Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing—life forevermore" (Psalm 133:1, 3). This passage reminds us of the importance of unity, fellowship, and togetherness, which bring power and blessing. Without this unity, or by underestimating it, we will get nowhere. However, this unity should be genuine, not falsified as seen in South Sudan, but enjoyed by everyone.
As I stated earlier, the spirit of unity was strong, and everybody enjoyed it. For example, the attached is a selection of forms that included students from all ten states way back in 2016. A system that values diversity, although not realistic. It is essential to note that tribalism, nepotism, and the like are artificially created and can be overcome through efforts to promote inclusivity, understanding, and a shared national identity.

With that in mind, every citizen has a reason to ask their political leaders in parliament what they do to fight and end tribalism, to enhance inclusive policies, shared national goals and values, and foster community unity. There are hundreds of MPs in all ten states and 3 administrative areas who should notice this evil destroying the nation. Nobody wants to be an island, but still, it is important to make the unity attractive for every citizen when it comes to the national cake's distribution.
In conclusion, South Sudan's future depends on its ability to overcome the illusion of tribalism and unite its people. By promoting inclusivity, understanding, and a shared national identity, the country can move towards a brighter future where every citizen feels valued and included. It's time for leaders to take action and for citizens to demand accountability in the pursuit of genuine unity and a prosperous South Sudan.
