A Guide to Effective Leadership
Devotion Thirty-One
Joshua 24:15. “...But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
One day, I had a brief discussion with my colleague, who is a coach and manager of a local club. I asked him why he wanted to buy a player from my club, given that football in our town doesn't generate much revenue. His response stunned me when he said, “I want to create a legacy by winning many championship titles under my name.”
Like my colleague, the coach, everyone craves a legacy. The question is, what kind of legacy should you as a leader strive to leave? When contemplating the greatest legacy a person or leader can leave, we see Joshua challenging his people to choose, saying, “...then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve.”
Joshua's dedication to leaving a meaningful legacy was based on serving God. He declared, “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” This inspires leaders to prioritise serving God and to leave a lasting legacy.
There are many ways a leader can build a reputation, but without God’s blessing, they are vain. The desire to leave a legacy has motivated many to pursue goals that seem impossible, such as exploring space, making discoveries, and engaging in risky ventures. But for a trustworthy legacy, let us emulate Moses, Jesus, and Paul, whose lives were entirely dedicated to serving God.
As we aim to leave a lasting legacy, let us reflect on our leadership and ask ourselves: Do we genuinely serve God to qualify us to leave a lasting legacy in His Church? What kind of legacy do you want to develop that will also shape your future destiny? Choose wisely, but first, choose to serve God; otherwise, pride will taint and stain your legacy.
When you reflect on your leadership, may you choose to serve God as the best legacy that lasts longer. Serving God brings more blessings, as Matthew 6:33 puts it, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and all these things will be added unto you.”
Prayer:
Dear God, help me choose serving you over idolising other gods for my legacy. While others crave legacy through their desires for worldly riches and fame, let me be an inspiration like Joshua to your church by serving you only. I trust your guidance.
Amen.
