Advocate and human rights lawyer Kenyi Y.A. Kenyi has strongly criticised Martin Elia, describing him as "a stooge of tyranny—a man with no functioning party, no principles, and no shame." According to Kenyi, Elia is a survivalist minister who has turned his back on the very people he once swore to represent, surviving in government only through blackmail and betrayal. He described Elia as an unprincipled figurehead who continues to defend policies that have inflicted immense pain and suffering on innocent civilians.
Kenyi further stated that Elia remains a loyal member of a tribal and oppressive regime that operates without any constitutional legitimacy. He pointed out that, in his blind allegiance, Elia once went as far as to classify the Nuer people as a hostile tribe solely because they supported Dr. Riek Machar. Ironically, Kenyi noted, Elia—who had expressed deep hatred for the Nuer—later married a Nuer woman, exposing his hypocrisy.
Kenyi described Elia’s behaviour as erratic and disgraceful, likening him to an animal—an ironic comparison, given his background as a veterinary doctor. Yet, even in that profession, Kenyi remarked, Elia failed to live up to expectations, reportedly refusing to treat a single animal during his time in the UK and beyond.
Adding to the criticism, Kenyi questioned Elia’s claim to be the Chairperson of the Pojulu Community in Juba. He asserted that Elia has never condemned the atrocities committed by the very regime he serves—atrocities that devastated the Pojulu people in Lainya County between 2016 and 2018. "What kind of community leader remains silent while his people bleed?" Kenyi asked.
