POEM: NO, NOT ME AT THIS TIME
Standing
in the valley of hope, with my ballots,
Raising
the flag of identity and dignity,
Only
to be swallowed by a crowd of despair and depravity.
Oh,
must I celebrate the ill-created sorrows?
YES,
not me at this time, yes, until I see no one like me
Living
in a refugee or displaced camp,
Yes,
I will celebrate the day, but not I, at this time.
YES,
until you're at home in joy and peace,
Living
with your children under your mango trees,
Yes,
I will celebrate the day, but not I, at this time.
YES,
until I see all roads to Juba safer ,
All
routes out of Juba are safer for everyone.
Yes,
I will celebrate the day, but not I, at this time.
YES,
until I see no citizen with birthright and identity
Harassed
and checked in Nesitu or behind Gordon,
Yes,
I will celebrate the day, but not I, at this time.
YES,
until I hear all the unknown gunmen known,
No
unknown-known gunman has ever been known.
Yes,
I will celebrate the day, but not I, at this time.
YES,
until I see every child, girl, and boy
Saved
and safe for education in a story,
Yes,
I will celebrate the day, but not I at this time.
YES,
until I see our mothers and sisters collect firewood
In
the bushes, they return home unharmed.
Yes,
I will celebrate the day, but not I at this time.
YES,
until I see street-free children,
A
human with storage for their produce,
Yes,
I will celebrate the day, but not me at this time.
YES,
until I see nights without fatalities,
A
night one sleeps where they wish.
Yes,
I will celebrate the day, but not me at this time.
YES,
until I see diasporas return home,
Retailers
become wholesalers and investors.
Yes,
I will celebrate the day, but not I at this time.
YES,
until I see young women of menstruating age
With
ease, able to attain sanitary kits,
Yes,
I will celebrate the day, but not I at this time.
YES,
until those laid landless find their hopes,
And
those hopeless find a blessing,
Yes,
I will celebrate the day, but not me at this time.
YES,
until everyone is protected by law,
And
lawkeepers become justice seekers,
Yes,
I will celebrate the day, but not I at this time.
Yes,
we're entitled to sanity and dignity.
Divinely
born to live without depravity,
Yes,
I will celebrate the day; until then, not I, at this time.
Yes,
never be jubilant at a gleam in cloudy eyes;
Lift
a sad voice and mourn for justice and freedom;
Be
a brother's keeper; dine together in harmony.
Until
then, not I, at this time.
Wishing
you good luck, pity celebrants!"
