Rights lawyer Kenyi Yasin Abdallah Kenyi said as South Sudan celebrates 14 years of independence, what should have been a moment of unity and progress has instead become a symbol of lost promise. Independence has been reduced to just a flag, a national anthem, and a regime without vision, direction, or development.

Power is seen as tribal privilege, not national responsibility, undermining democracy and the rule of law. This is a country that was born through a democratic referendum, where all 64 tribes voted for independence. Yet just two years later, it turned into a tribal state led by a regime that rewards loyalty based on ethnicity instead of merit or national interest.

The federal system, long demanded since 1947, remains unfulfilled. Basic freedoms and democratic values are ignored. This regime, rooted in tribal identity, fears elections and democracy, fearing loss of power to the other 63 tribes. Their hold on power relies not on popular support but on foreign military backing, particularly from Uganda.

The Dinka community must realize that confronting Kiir’s leadership now is in their best long-term interest. His rule has brought corruption, poor governance, and ethnic exclusion and left a dangerous legacy where future Dinka leaders may struggle to earn national trust from the other 63 tribes. If South Sudan is to rise again, tribal politics must come to an end. Only inclusive and visionary leadership can deliver justice, development, and unity for all South Sudanese.
