IN HIS FOOTSTEPS: A Servant Leadership's Heart

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 (NKJV)

Leadership Devotion, 2 July 2025.

When you step into Central Africa Baptist University, one of the loudest messages you will notice is "We exist to train the next generation of servant leaders in Africa for Great Commission living." This phrase is paraphrased and prominently displayed on walls and posters throughout the university, visible from 100 to 200 meters. Building on this foundation, hundreds of graduates from the university are impacting communities across Africa by following Jesus' model of servant leadership.

This approach to leadership starkly contrasts with the world's view. Many people desire to be great, take prominent positions, and exert authority. Some refuse to wait in line for food due to their age, political status, or professional position. Others insist on being addressed by their titles rather than their names. Some might overlook the needs of others, like a woman requiring emergency transportation to the hospital.

In light of these attitudes, Jesus' teaching on leadership stands out. The apostles struggled with the same desires, but Jesus taught them a simple yet profound formula: to be great, one must serve others. Leadership involves serving others with humility and selflessness, focusing on empowering and supporting team members rather than personal gain.

This principle is echoed in the words of the great South African leader, Nelson Mandela, who said, "In the face of dangers, a leader leads from the front; when there's victory, he sits behind and celebrates together." Peter, Paul, and Moses exemplified this selfless leadership.

What aspect of leadership do you struggle with when serving others? Do you consider serving women at their conferences or helping in the kitchen? How often do you prioritise serving your family members? God calls us to be servant leaders, serving others rather than being served, to be great. Serve with humility and selflessness. Focus on others rather than yourself.

Dear God, thank you for reminding me to be a leader who serves others. Help me to prioritise serving other people, the church, and family members, following Jesus' example. May I be a leader who serves others, not seeking personal gain, but rather seeking to honour You.

Amen.
